The Security Deposit Mechanics

Mandatory Authorization Hold at Pickup
No Cash. No Apple Pay. No Chime.
The security deposit is an authorization hold, not a direct charge. It ensures that the vehicle is returned safely and covers post-rental incidentals. If the vehicle is returned in its original condition, the hold is released immediately upon our inspection. The deposit may be used in part or in full to cover the following:
Post-Trip Tolls & Fines
Unpaid SunPass tolls, red-light camera tickets, parking citations, and their associated administrative processing fees.
Fuel & Cleaning
Refueling charges if the tank is not returned at the departure level, or detailing fees ($150-$250) for smoke, excessive sand, or pet hair.
Late Returns & Damage
Hourly late fees, extra days incurred, or the deductible for any physical damage/lost keys not covered by CDW.
Understanding Bank Processing Times
Smart Cars Rentals releases your $300.00 authorization hold within 5 minutes of a successful vehicle check-in. We do not keep your money. However, the time it takes for those funds to reflect in your available balance is dictated entirely by your bank's clearinghouse. Credit cards typically clear in 2-5 business days. Debit cards may take 5-10 business days. We cannot expedite your bank's internal processing times.
Reservation Cancellation Timeline
48+ Hours Notice
Cancellations requested at least 48 hours prior to your scheduled pickup time are eligible for a 100% full refund of any prepaid amounts to the original payment method.
Under 48 Hours Notice
Late cancellations made within 48 hours of the scheduled pickup time will incur a penalty equivalent to one (1) full day's rental rate. The remaining balance will be refunded.
2 Hours Post-Pickup
If you fail to arrive within 2 hours of your scheduled pickup time without notifying our office, you are classified as a "No-Show". The reservation is automatically canceled, and a one-day penalty fee is retained. Vehicles will not be held indefinitely.
Non-Refundable Scenarios
Early Returns / Unused Days
We do not issue refunds, prorations, or credits for vehicles returned earlier than the date and time specified on your final Rental Agreement. Once you take possession of the vehicle, you are billed for the entire booked period.
Refusal of Service at Counter
If you arrive at pickup and fail to meet our strict rental requirements (e.g., name on ID does not match the payment card, expired license, no proof of flight for debit cards, or arriving intoxicated), we will refuse service. This is treated as a late cancellation, and a one-day rental penalty will apply.
